First serious attempt at Mapping

My first actual map (that I use to test scripts with), was very basic, and suited my own needs. This map is my
attempt at making a decent looking map, that people wont gouge their eye's out when they look at it. Its
pretty basic right now, I'll touch it up during the week. Lol, almost turned that into a . That would have
been bad >_<.

The mountains are a bit to high for my liking, other then that, it looks lovely.

Can't wait to see it finished! :D

Here's a bit of an update. I rounded out the mountains a bit, didn't like the way it looked. I also added a few
spots for villages. Up to five in total so far. Anyways, here's the pic:

You can't see it from that angle, but there's a ramp leading down from the back of the main ridge that
brings you to a village.

Much better! :D

Did you test the ramp though? Sometimes they can be to steep for roads and creatures :p

Not close to ingame testing yet. Still deciding if I want to keep the same land mass, or add more, take some
off, ect ect. 5 villages seem kind of weird to me, want to add a sixth, but maybe 5 will be enough for now.

The five villages so far are:

To the left before the main valley, before the ramp up to the ridge, after the ramp to the right, then there's a
village I'm going to put in the back of the ridge area, and you can see a platform ridge where the last village
will be. Not sure where to add other ones without making the map look less natural then it already is with
the ramps.

I would try a small playtest if I were you.

This will allow you to spot problems, such as a to steep ramp, or even add vilage locations or beaches, or other estetic land masses by 'eagle flight'. Instead of the normal 'birds eye view' you get in the editor.

But, it's all your choice really! :) I do like this land more then the first you showed. Because the mountains arn't sureal anymore ^^  Not that there is anything wrong with it, they looked very nice.

They just didn't match the rest of the land.  Perhaps you could use those types of mountains in a differant map you might one time make when oGaM - Multiplayer comes along, if it ever does.
I heard bad news about it.

ooh, much better than the other map you posted!

it sorta reminds me of my desert map for ogam...

the only thing I don't like is that the ramps look kinda un-natural... perhapse make them curve abit more?

Yeah, I'll check that out, thanks for the advice Zypher. Was wondering what to do about those ramps  :upside.

Oh! That indeed looks better.

By the way, sorry if my critisism seems mean, or unnice, it's not ment that way.

I'm actualy quite in awe, as I couldn't create such a nice looking map! :)

I infact.. couldn't create any map.. and then take the critisism and use it!

I must say, you took the advise / critisism very nicely! It looks more playable now!

Even something Lionhead might have created themselves for a map, I can't wait to see the next step! :D

Here it is with a basic texture overlay. Gah, I don't have an eye for textures. I'm gonna have to guess it from
this point. Don't be surprised if textures for this map look poor  :suspect. Since I actually have textures layed
down right now, I might as well test how the map works before I get too absorbed with texturing.

ya know, that looks prety cool!

I imagine this will be a desert map?

you should most definatly talk to daxter about making some maps for ogam!

I will have a new fellow mapper!

yay!

Lol, we'll see how my skills pan out first. I've only begun mapping you know  :upside.

Well, the map loads nicely ingame. But I'm stumped on how to start with a creature. Anyone got any clue
as to how? Or is this mainly a script-side issue? The display creature tool seems to only just... display
creatures... Thanks in advance.

I have no knowledge of scripting, however I hope this helps?

Yay update  :happytears: I hate real life sometimes.

1st, thank you Miles. That didn't help me, but it made me think of the scripts Kays used in Three Corners
that came with the map. I looked, and found out what to do from there. 2nd, Syclai, I take criticism very
well. And at my point in my modding career for Bnw2, I shouldn't be stubborn about it either. As long as
its constructive as your criticism was, I don't mind one bit  :D.

I worked some more on those ramps. The left most ramp just didn't feel right with just a single ramp
leading up into it. I decided to make it more of a natural flow rather then a simple ramp. I finally have
some texture on this slab of rock. You can see grass, along with a nice beach. I accept criticism for my use
of textures.

Hope I don't burn your eye's out  :shocked

EEEEK!!!

haha, just kidding!

okay, I can now see where you need help....

first off, all of your land has what seem to be potholes in them... wou might want to smooth those out, as well as the mountians(which seem abit too sharp.)

secondly, you probably want to use another texture on top of the rock that looks like pebbles or actual boulders (there are alot of nice ones for that under the norse textures.)

thirdly, you'd probably want to use sevral colors for the grass, such as a darker green, a yello green, and a light green, an mix them around over the land where you want the grass to be. use a natural looking brush for that. you probably want to blend all of the textures (includeing the beech and rock) together nicely... if you know how. (if not then I shall explain in detail.)

try studing some of my maps in gthe ogam thread, as well as the maps that lionhead has made(which can be opened and edited through the landscape editor.)

nice map overall though!  :D

hope that helps!

If you don't mind going into detail, I'd like to know about blending textures.  :upside
