Archery defences

The long open ended wall has worked for years in various games.
In B&W2 the enemy creature can cause problems if the walls are a bit close together,  creatures only attack walls if there is no cear "open"  path to take.
Creature AI is often limited in this respect and frequent saves save a lot of time when experimenting.

"The long open ended wall has worked for years in various games"
you must mean in black and white 2 because iv played almost every
stradgie game under the sun and it pays to have a defence that can stand
up to numerous enemy attacks. and yes enemy creatures (especial in
the second japan land) attack the extra wall with the archers but i
see that just as a chance to increase your creatures skill by sending him
out to fight the creature. so in short this is what iv found it usefull for...
Decent to upgrade troop's exp. (slowly)
You can put men on the ground in front of the extra wall but behind the main gate. (in which bouth archers and soldiers get exp)
Nice to have as a last resort if your main armys are destroyed and your gate is too
I also created around 200 archers (5 devisions of 40 men) at the level is "specialist" in the second japan land and around 100 in the second Norse land so its usefull to upgrade archers in this manor as a prelude to war measure of preparations BUT
If a enemy wonder is triggered on or near the gate you might lose some or even all of you advanced soldiers meaning you lose all the time you put into them, and a enemy creature that charges in can also cause damage

in the end you wind up with archers at the level you want them to be but it takes some time and nurturing
and they cant be used as a only line of defence (soldiers will run right past the enemy fire and wreck your town)
so its good to have a small devision of swordsman to keep them busy while the archers shoot them out

Have you not  played games like C3 it is the most basic tactic .
The game AI sees an open door to attack your city, when they  do you just kill them as they pass any that are left  get stopped by the ground troop's  and get killed by both archers and swordsmen.

i see what you mean but archers cant get many as they run by i tested it out
(5-7 max) and even if the archers continue to fire at the enemy (as your swordsmen
take care of them) the archers will not gain as much exp as the mellee group.
