Archery defences

Once again i have a question.
i play allot of stragie games so i thought archers could be used
for defence if placed on a wall but after having a few buildings
torn down by enemys attacks i found out it doesn't work.
they fire but only after they pass the wall line i have 120 archers
on the wall so i want to know if its just my guys sucking or is it all
archers attack only after the enemy has passed the wall?
also i noticed even though they have killed around 460 men
not a one of them have increase in exp. so does have the archers
on the wall decrease the amount of exp they gain?

From what I've seem they do gain experience when stationed on a wall. However I find that when they are on a wall that they can be quite vulnerable to being taken out.

So instead I like to station them just outside of the gates with an infantry platoon for added protection.

and they do seem to fire off fewer rounds of arrows when on a wall  :rolleyes

So your saying i should keep lets say 3 devisions of archery troops OUTSIDE the gate
with 1 or 2 swordsman devisions outside the gate (infront of the archers right?)
or should there be more?

No, I just use one of about 40 men and I link a similar sized infantry platoon to the archers. Sometimes I'll have a small infantry platoon stationed with the acrchers to catch any troops which get by the first platoon and who are going after the archers.

so from that im asuming your a good god?
but now this poses two more questions for me,
1.if this is true do i really need a wall in the first place?
2.how the hell do i build a gate wall and does it have any real purpose?

Well I try to be good. :blush

1.if this is true do i really need a wall in the first place?

On some levels you don't really need a wall. But...
1 - Walls make your people feel secure.
2 - Walls add impressivness to your town.
3 - You can use walls to funnel the enemy to your troops.

2.how the hell do i build a gate wall and does it have any real purpose?

- You build the wall first and then choose the gate thingy in the build menu.
- It allows your people and creature to pass through the wall. Without the gate they'll be stuck inside your walls. :p

what happens when they start hitting you with the seroise stuff?
im talking larger numbers and siege tank, do you send the creature in to battle?

Yah, the creature is an easy way to dispense with any siege weapons.

There's only a few lands in which you get hit with large numbers of troops. By the time that happens you should have enough influence built up around your town to take care of them with a few well placed miracles.

No tactic is perfect for all situations. You should be making adjustments to compensate when things don't work as expected.

One tactic I realy like is really old and not specificly for B&W2 at all but it works a treat.
I like the walls of death,  you can make them anywhere the enemy attacks and the work well for upgrading platoons.

* Solid feature or other blockage.
- wall with archers
I infantry

Main village.

Atacking troops .

........................

The enemy AI treats this as a free way in but very few troops make it to the infantry and  eneny creatures will often try to run through without too much damage.
You can put gates as a final backup if you like behind the infantry but usually it is not needed.

i came up with a new archery defence.
i was watching the history channel and it was talking about germanys invasion of
russia during the second world war and how close they come to winning when it showed
the tactics they used and i thought insted of tanks why not walls? so far its worked
flawlessly for me

      .        .
.....:.gate.:.....

the dots respresent walls  i cant exactly draw it out but  2 walls curving in around the front of the gate with about 30 on each
fire volley very rapidly that seems to level almost any number up to 120 enemy soldiers

i thought insted of tanks why not walls?

But walls aren't as mobile as tanks.  :p

Both tactics described above work fine as long as it's against troops. But when there's an enemy creature involved you'll need to make some adjustments since the creature will try to knock down the walls and kill the troops on them.

In the last Japanese level I ended up making a unmanned section of wall just inside of the range of the archers on the main wall. As long as it was intact, the enemy creature would go for this wall first rather than the main wall.

On the subject of funneling enemy troops, here's a little tip for the second Norse land.
As soon as possible capture the first town in the valley where the Norse troops go down. Then lay the foundation for a wall part way across the valley and at an angle toward your town. Then desert the town. The enemy will recapture it, and finish building the wall. When this is done, station a platoon of archers on this wall so that any enemy troops coming down the valley will have to pass within their range. :)

fight fire with fire i always say, possibly the best wepon aginst a creature is a creature.

thats right in the first game all creatures were so scared of mine they ran away when he wanted to fight
thats the ultimate defence  :yes

(he was kinda dark though he threw people in water watched them drown and laughed)

my creatures evil but he liked to make their deaths quick, thats why i taught him megablast!!  :D :D :D

well alouth he drowned people and laughed he did have a good side, when a switched his leash
his entire personality changed from dark demon to protector of the people using heals mircales
food and water to help them out. but i liked seeing him drown them it was much more funny
his favorite spell against monsters was the lightening bolt and against villages he used the
lightening bolt increase (he knew it takes more fire power to wipe out a town then a creature, smart and leathal)

I've found a new way (and very easy way) to upgrade archers

........Gate........

        ....A....

the doted line represents walls and the "A" represents the archers
now the way it works is simple while soldiers are positioned in ways
ready to attack if the gates are opened (the positions are different in
each land but easily to recognise) open the gate for a short period of time
keep them open until the soldiers are right out side the gate then
quickly close that they should stop right there in front of the gate
and the archers arrows go through the gate meaning your archers
can safely kill the soldiers with no damage to your town or your men.
but make sure the second wall you place is close (but not to close)
to the wall (to make sure your archers can fire beyond the gate while still
leaving enough room for migration)

That works well if you attend , often you want to be elsewhere getting on with the game.
It may be fun for you to be  a door keeper  but I would rather set up defences that look after themselves.

I do get on with the game and the defences i make do hold without me you just go to it once in a while to upgrade your archers.
remember this isn't for a continued defence its just a easy way to upgrade archers for combat.
i mean picture it a force of 200 archers reaching the last level with no form aggression against them
