Hi all,
I know its pretty late in the day, but I only got B&W II last week. I am now at land 6 and only have to win over the last japanese town, but all of a sudden my frame rates have dropped so much as to make the game unplayable, its has been running very swiftly up until a few hours ago.

This PC is only 2 weeks old, its a dual core 2.66 - 2gigs of RAM & a geforce 7950GT 512mb card.
I have the game set at 1024x768 & set to medium graphics, lowering this makes no difference. I have no unessessary things running in the background.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to improve this. I really would like to continue to play this game.

Many Thanks & excuse me if this a newbie'ish question.

Edit to add:  The game is fully patched.

Do you have the 1.1 and 1.2 patches?

When I first got BW2 it ran great, and then all the sudden large amounts of people (well, 30+ zoomed in) would lag it to where I could barely alt+tab out.  The patches fixed it for me (I think the 1.2 one, specifically)

yup, if you look at the end of my post you'll see I edited my post shortly after I posted it to add that I was fully patched.

Is there any editing I can do to any of the game files, baring in mind I am a newbie to B&W2, but not a newbie to editing game files.

Hi, the game will lag a bit when there's a lot going on. It can be quite CPU intensive at times. But a dual core should be able to handle it. I have a Athlon 3700+ with a Radeon X1900 and I usually get a decent frame rate at 1280x1024 high detail. But it does lag when there's a lot going on like a couple of large armies doing battle.

Are your video drivers up to date?

One thing you can try, in the Black & White 2/Data folder is a file called graphics.config. This file controls the graphics settings for the various card. Open it with Notepad, or a text editor. You should be able to tell how the layout goes and there's an explanation at the top of the page. Add your card to the list with the values 3,0,3 which are the highest settings. You could try dropping the either the first or the last value to 2 and see if that helps. But I think you should be able to run at max spec.

Are you using Vista by any chance?

Thanks for all the advise, I was able to get the game to run at a proper speed - I hadn't noticed that you could set your video options to custom, after I took off a few things it was fine.

I was surprised too at how badly this game ran on a PC with specs like mine. Mind you I am a die-hard Sims 2 fan and as yet have unable to play it, due to graphical  crashing issues :( Seems to me like the more complex the PC the more will go wrong... grrr

I built this PC, so I was able to put XP on it. I wasn't going anywhere near Vista.

My drivers for the various things are up to date, apart from my graphics card which is using the 94 drivers as this is supposed to be the best one to runs Sims 2 Bon Voyage on (ho-hum) I have tried about 6 different drivers.

Ah well, hopefully i'll be able to get my fav games to run, until then at least I can play B&W 2.. I'm now about to go to land 7 and it looks like its going to be a toughy!!

Thanks again

It should run better than that. But for some reason, both of the B&W games don't always run as well as they should with nVidia video cards.

I wonder if that  has anything to to with the ATI logo when you start the game  :D

It could be. They did use all Radeon cards in the developement of BW2. But even so, there were problems with black voids in the landscapes with a few models.

Strangely enough, Fable TLC sports the Nvidia logo and there have been some problems with it and the nVidia cards also.

Nvidia always seems to have more problems, with more games than ATI, but Nvidia score  with business apps like CAD and presentation software.
Raw speed per buck  is ATI  plus  optimised driver for me.
