Hi all.

I had a prob with my PC yesterday, and whilst talking to the engineer I mentioned my problem with B&W. Where the game crashes after about 30 mins, saying that something has stopped working.

Well. He suggested uninstalling the game, then R-clicking on the SETUP.EXE file on the game disc, and loading in COMPATABILITY MODE.

My question is.
Can I uninstall the game, then reinstall and carry on from where I left off.

I am currently on land 5.

Thanks in advance. Gary.

No, the game is saved in a strange way and you'll loose your progress.

Before you uninstall, download BWBackup and use it to backup your game.

Thanks for your reply Kays.

Once I have backed up the game, can I then un-install, and re-install? If so, could you please explane how I should go about all of this. Hwo to use the BACKUP tool, and what to do once I have re-installed the game.

Many thanks. Gary.

There is a readme.txt file included which will explain how to do a backup as well as how to restore your profiles.

Do the backup, then uninstall the game through Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Reinstall the game, patch it to V1.20 and then restore your backup. Any addons can be installed then. Using compatibility mode for Win98 might help. But usually uninstalling ang reinstalling will do the trick.

Thanks Kays.

I'll give it a go now, and will let you know how I get on.

ATB Gary.

Well, here we are again.

More trouble. I completed the backup and un-installed, but when it came to reloading the game I got an ERROR window saying:-

This build of CDCode is for Black and White this is an invalid build of CDCode. Please fill out the EReg Config Form to obtain a valid CDCode build.

I went into the EReg folder and entered the game code numbers. When I tried to install again, but I received the same error. I do have two B&W discs. I thought I may have mixed the numbers to discs, so I went back into the EReg folder to enter the new numbers but the window for the numbers didn't appear. All I got was the window to register, Which I have already done.

I bit long winded, sorry.
Any ideas.

ATB Gary.

Try reinstalling the game with the second CD.

When BW1 is uninstalled (not so for BW2) the registration code in the registry doesn't get deleted so you should be able to do a reinstall without having to re-enter the registration code. You might be able to change it in the registry also. Start >> Run type in regedit and click on OK. When that window opens Ctrl+F for find and input EA Games. One of the folders shown should be Black & White with a sub-folder called ergc. Hit F-3 until you see it. The ergc folder contains the reg code you can try to change it there. Before doing so, right click on the Black & White folder, select Export to save that registry entry. Give it a name and remember where it was saved to. Double clicking on it will restore that registry entry if there's a problem.

In the Black & White folder the only file is NAMED (Default)   TYPE Reg-sz   DATA (value not set)

Any sugestions?

Wrong one. Keep searching (F-3) untill you find the proper one. Or try doing the search for ergc.

Did you try re-installing from the second CD instead of the first one you used?

That's wierd ???

This is the path to it. Try to find it by the folder names.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Black and White\ergc

If it's not there, try uninstalling and re-installing the game.

I am so sorry.

I have tried both discs with both numbers, (numbers changed in the ergc folder). I still get the error message.

This build of CDCode is for Black and White this is an invalid build of CDCode. Please fill out the EReg Config Form to obtain a valid CDCode build.

Is that registry entry there? Can you find it? ???

I went to the ergc folder which contained the file with the game code number. I modified that number with the one from my other game. I tried to install the game useing both discs, but I still get the error message.

This is getting wierd... One of the codes should work with one of the CDs.

You could try deleting that key. (Black and White) to see what happenns. Do back it up first.

Also is the following key in the registry? It's the uninstall string. If it's there, maybe deleting it will force a proper re-install. Again back it up first.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E51B4CD9-A0A6-4324-B26A-31B3F2DE26CE}

I deleted the B&W folder. No differance. So I have un-deleted it.

I'm not sure what you mean. I was unable to follow your string on my pc to see where it ended up. My game number is:-
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\classes\virtualstore\machine\software\electronic atrs\ea games\Black & White\ergc

Does that make any sence to you.
I am sorry if I am a bit on the slow side. :blush

EDIT:-
I have been able to follow your string as far as uninstall. The string that you state is not in my uninstall folder.
ATB Gary.

Don't worry about the uninstall string not being there. Looks like it gets created after a successful install.

Your registry key doesn't seem to be where I'm used to seeing it. Download the attached file, It's a copy of my registry key. Unzip it and double click on it to add it and try to install the game again.

I tried loading both discs, and got the same error message.

It looks like I am going to have to forego the end of land 5, and continue onto B&W 2.
Thinking of it, if I can't sort this out, I will never be able to return to B&W 1. Even starting from land 1.

OHHH :angry  what a cockup.

The only thing I can think of now is to backup the registry, Go though it looking for Black and White as well as Black & White and delete all. Then rename the game directory to somethng else and try to force a fresh install.
