Tracking Population

I've never been able to accurately keep track of village population to abode ratio. When you hold your hand over the totem and it says something like 65/72 - what does that refer to? I always thought it was number of villagers out of number of available abode space, or vice versa, but it appears that is not so. Unless I'm missing something.

I read somewhere that children don't count. Like if you have an abode that fits 4 adults, there could be four adults living there plus two children. So when they turn 18 suddenly they are homeless. But I have noticed that even when Expansion Desire is at 100% there are empty spaces in abodes already built! It's very confusing.

Does anyone have any tips on tracking population?

It's all more of a balancing act really.

I've found you cannot keep all desires down all of the time.  Once you have a prosperous village, they're going to start wanting whatever they have the least of, so like alot of well off poeple in real life, they want more space even when they already have enough :rolleyes .

The best you can do is to try and keep the health/children and expansion flags balanced somewhere in the middle as they're always going to want to expand when everything else is ok.

So far as I can tell, the children desire rockets as soon as they have surplus food, as well as extra space - have a look at what happens to the offspring desire as you remove food from the store, it should go down as the food desire flag ascends. It also seems to me that the building desire refers to actual construction, rather than the buildings themselves in some cases; I've seen the building desire plummet when I placed down a hoard of scaffolds, and then rocket again once all those were finished even though there was then space for another 30 villagers! The bigger the settlement, the larger the number of scaffolds it takes to do this.

Most of the time my villages are at 100% desire for buildings and offspring, yet the stat for villager satisfaction is at or near 100%. Although it quotes the desires as a percentage, I suspect either a bug (perhaps they didn't expect anyone to be quite so benevolent  :upside), or that it is not as simple as the percentage makes it seem  :suspect

El_Aleco - I have noticed all those things too and experienced the same with the villager satisfaction percentage. I've actually made it a habit to keep the food desire roughly around 40% at all times because it helps keep the offspring desire flag down, and helps to keep the villgers busy instead of lazy leeches that just sit around and do nothing :p

I was just wondering if I was missing some vital knowledge about population management, but I guess not :D

I'm still curious about those numbers at the totem, though.

The number on the left is the amount of people you have, and the number on the right is how much space you have in your houses for people to live in.
Been a long time since I played but i think that's it...

Da. As has been said, the people always want something. Typically, there should be 1/10 - 1/5 empty space, but then they want chillens.

I do like to keep a fresh supply of children for sacrifice.

...what? Don't judge me. I AM A GOD! But, we all are, huh? You got any spare children I can borrow?  :;):
