Sleeping in the pen?

Hey all, first post from a longtime lurker.

I just recently reinstalled this and started up a new game after about a 2 year absence, but I'm having problems teaching my creature specific sleep habits. No matter what I try, I simply can't get my creature to sleep exclusively in his pen.

Every time he goes to his pen by himself to sleep and I reward/punish him, I just get the "Creature will sleep more/less when he is exhausted" message. If I reward/punish him for sleeping anywhere else, I get the same thing. In previous games, I was able to get my creature to sleep in his pen by clicking on the temple with the lease. Now all that does is give me a "Creature is feeling curious" message (rewarding that just seems to make him want to hang around the temple and stare at it for long periods of time) or makes him crap on it (with all disregard for any poop training I may have already given him).

This is starting to become extremely frustrating. Any suggestions?

Well, it happens randomly. ( Like what happened to me) Your best bet is to tie him up near your creature pen in "Free Will" mode. That's what I did.

Actually, I think I may have figured out what the problem was. I decided to start up a new game and not skip the creature tutorial this time around. Went through all of it, and on the first night, after meeting the Guide, I led him back to his pen and clicked on it. Sure enough, he goes right in. Rewarding him seems to make him want to sleep there more now. (Oddly enough, clicking on the temple will make him sleep just outside it; rewarding him then makes him go into his pen to sleep and gives me the "Creature will sleep against that kind of thing more" message. Go figure. *shrug*)

Seems like skipping the creature tutorial was the problem. Could have something to do with skipping the part where you have to comfort/scold him when he's scared right at the beginning, or it might be related to how much time he spends sitting in the pen and can't leave before completing the tutorials (maybe he just has to spend that time getting acclimated?).

Whatever the root of the problem was, it seems to be sorted now. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Hmm, this is quite interesting as I remember I used to have some problems with this too.

Just to contiribute my own experiences on this.

The only way I could get the creature to sleep at night (and by happy co-incidence, sleep in his pen) was to pick the Ape on a restart game (i.e. a game I already completed, but chose a new creature the second time around).

The Ape starts out in his Pen and it is night time.

He immediately goes to sleep.

Once he wakes up I reward him and hey-presto, he sleeps at night in his pen :D .

If a pick the Cow or the Tiger, it isn't night time, so they don't go to sleep when they arrive in the pen.  This trick only seems to work with the Ape.

Go fig :rolleyes :p .

From memory  there are  3  parts to the sleep training.
Getting him to sleep when he is tired.
Getting him to sleep in his pen.
Getting him to sleep at night.
All 3 can some times be done  in a single session but often you don't do it exactly right .
For  fast growth you need all 3.
.
Now if you add a night only map,  a pile of food and speed up time he will really rocket up. :D

Yeah, getting him tired and telling him to sleep is the way... Remember, sleeping at night will make him grow faster. :)

Hi, I humbly ask you experts for some advice =).  I have tried the excellent extreme growth map but there seems to be a side effect. The creature will only sleep in the pen. It will walk half way across the map to sleep in the pen and collapse exhausted. Can I teach it to sleep anywhere or teach it not to sleep in the pen at all?

Sometimes I get the message "your creature will sleep against that kind of thing more" when I stroke it in the pen. I can not get this message when I stroke the creature after sleeping anywhere else. Thanks!

Hi, welcome to our forums. :)

That's one of the problems by using an all night map. He only knows to sleep  in his pen and not anywhere else.

I think that the best thing to do there is to give him a slap rather than petting him. However, it will take a long time to break him of the habit. One trick, if possible, try to keep a couple of teleporters open.

Someone didn't notice this is BW1 :p

Anyway! There is a great tutorial on how to have your creature sleep at night, in the pen, without having adverse effects on him not taking a powernap during the day. (If you slap your creature silly for sleeping during daylight, he will eventualy just 'sit' resting at daylight, and only 'sleep' at night.)

To make your creature sleep at night, force him back to his pen at dusk with the learning leash, and reward him after he sleeps through the night. "Your creature will sleep more at night." Sometimes he will wake up, look curious, yawn, and go back to sleep. Reward him after this second sleep rather than the first, to reinforce "sleep more at night" rather than just "sleep more when tired." If he fell asleep through exhaustion and you reward him, he will "rest more when exhausted." Some people slap their creatures after they have fully rested, as a way of teaching them not to sleep in. I consider this to be Cruel and Unusual Punishment.
