Problem Throwing Fireballs

Hi everyone. :) It's been many years since I visited a B&W community or played the game itself. But I recently made the decision to try again to get it working on XP, and after a couple of hours trying many different methods, it finally worked. :D Woohoo!

Everything seemed to be working fine and I was lost in a fluffy dream world of old memories. Damn, I had forgotten just how fun this game was. I passed the rock-throwing silver scroll on Land 1 without problems. But on Land 2, the Fireball challenge, my fireballs unerringly veered off to the right when I threw them- seemingly for no reason.

After failing to throw a single fireball even *near* the island, I tested it again throwing fireballs randomly around the map. They always veer to the right at quite a great angle (at least 30 degrees, sometimes more).

I'm perplexed by the problem, because I can throw rocks just fine. I know all about afterspin. I used to be quite the pro fireballer back in the day. It's definitely not being influenced by an after-throw movement of the mouse, because even when I'm extremely careful to throw in a perfectly straight line, it still flies off to the right. :(

I wonder... is this weird problem due to XP? That seems unlikely, but... hmmm. I just don't know. I've searched around for answers and havn't found any.

Edit: Also, I can't catch any fireballs I've thrown.

If anyone has any insight or suggestions I'd be very grateful. :) Oh, and hiya to any old friends/aquaintances who knew me as Moogle! *big wave*

Hi Moogie.

It's lways nice to see olbies come back into the fold :D .

The only thing I can think of for your problem is perhaps you mouse.  Do you have the sensitivity turned up real high?  Also, if its a laser mouse, I know some of them tend to suddenly jerk the mouse to the top right/left of the screen.  If your's happens to be a cheap-o laser mouse, then perhaps this might e sommething to do with your problem.

Agreed with Pat.
Definitively the problem is not with XP.

It's probable thats something with the fireball files or something like that too.

If you got an old mouse kicking around it is worth a try.
or
Just get used to it and aim to the left.
or
Be nice and don't throw fireballs, you don't need to except that one silver quest.

Thanks for the replies. :]

It's a laser mouse, but it's a Logitech G5, so it's not exactly a cheap-o model. :) It's very accurate and I havn't noticed the pointer jumping or acting erraticly at all during my gaming sessions. I highly recommend it, if anyone's in the market for a new mouse. ;)

The hand doesn't jump (or indeed move at all) after I've thrown a fireball, and like I mentioned, rocks travel along a perfect trajectory as they should do. Just not fireballs...

It's not a huge problem I suppose, as I'm aiming to be good-aligned.

Well, it's probably not the mouse though, then it could be as i said: Problem in the files, or something like that.
I really don't understand much about this.

Hey have you tried reinstalling the game?

If that was a simple thing to do, I would try it. But it took me too long to get it working on XP, so... I think I'll just live with the lopsided fireballs for now. xD

Arigatou gozaimasu, minna-san.

You know what else is weird? I can't slap my creature properly. It takes a monumental amount of effort (but mostly luck) to give him a light slap, and I can almost never do it. Most of the time the hand just tickles him, but if I try too hard he just gets a great big smack. There's no in-between.

Still sounds to me like you've got the sensitivity turned up too high on your mouse to be honest.  It might be more reactive to some mouse motions than others, e.g. creature slapping/fireball throwing.

I know some people buy high-end mice and turn up the sensitivity to get better gaming.  It just bugs the crap out of me though ¬_¬ .  Perhaps yours came with the sensitivity automaticially set to a high value?

Can you check if anything is out of the ordinary in your mouse's configuration by looking at it in the control panel?
