Missing Files?

I recently decided to try adding a new tattoo in BW1, but when I looked for where it is supposed to go - the 'profile' folder - the folder simply wasn't there. I tried searching for it, but was unable to find it. Although my game seems to run fine, could this have any effects? In particular I seem to be having trouble getting my creature to learn basic tasks and to act independently, i.e without me demonstrating and him copying. This may simply be the fault of poor training, though.  :p

In any case, is it possible for me to create a profile folder myself? Is there anything I might be missing since it doesn't appear to exist?

I'll ask this while I'm here, as well. Which Creature Mind file belongs to the player's creature? I'm wondering if I might be missing the one that should belong to my creature. I have eight Creaturemind files installed with the game, and I'm wondering if that's the correct number.

I'm playing on a Macbook, using the Feral version of the game. Thanks for any help!  :blush

I too am a Mac player and I have the same problem. The folder simply doesn't exist. I tried placing tattoo files in different places but nothing worked and finding Mac help for B&W is, well... difficult. I gave up after a while and just play without custom tattoos. Making your own maps is also more difficult on a Mac because none of the mod programs are compatible. One guy was having some luck but he hasn't been around in a while...

Anyway, long story short- There is no profile folder and I don't know how to get tattoos to work. Skins and user maps work fine, though, but the folders they go into are different ones.

edit: The missing folder doesn't affect gameplay. I was able to train my creatures just fine after reading some FAQs and using certain maps. I also have eight CreatureMind files. I don't think you can access your own creature's mind. If you could you would be able to alter its script and I'm pretty sure you can't do that. I might be wrong about that though.

CreatureMind scripts are in a fuzzy way anyway when you try to open them

You would need special coding know-how, or the correct program to open it, and edit it.

And yes, teaching creatures 'basic' knowledge is more difficult in black&White 1, creatures have a more complex mind, and really pay attention to alot of things, they can even try to repeat behaviour, that caused you to react in a way that pleased it, to get the same reaction again.

example: My creature sits down, instead of rolling over, and sleeping. - I wanted it to learn how to sleep, but it was just 1% tired, so, when it did sleep for that short time, I petted it. It then, non tired, slept again, just as short, and looked at my hand. I then petted it again. And saw my creature do this again.  I have to tell that my creature was 'Very very frightenend' at this time. So it will do more to 'please' you! ^^

Added to that, if you find out where the save files are kept for your own profile, you will find where you have to leave the custom icon. Finding your profile folder instead of the folder named 'profile'

Profile names for the folder are made in the following way, for each character, a _ is added in front.

So, for my name it would be _S_y_l_c_a_i

In that way, you can look for your own profile with finder.

If that fails, try looking for creatureshot_0.jpg  Creatures like to take up to 5 pictures, that it would display on it's own website, sadly, because BW is an old game, creature sites are disabled. :-/ But, the creature still takes pictures! ^^

Well, it's good to know it won't effect my gameplay.  :blush I haven't been able to find my profile folder at all, sadly - so I have no idea where it's saving! I'm going to try to do a little more searching, but unfortunately using the advice below I haven't found anything, which is quite odd. However, I really appreciate the creature training advice. Thanks very much for the help!  :)

Odd. I can't seem to find where the game makes saves or the profile, at all! It really doesn't seem to impair gameplay though, except for being able to add tattoos.  :p

On mine the Profiles, Data and Script directories are in  the main Game directory.
.
Doing your own map on  a Mac is entirely possible. The map itself is  entirely  plain text , so any simple text editor will do..
The Help file / Mapping list is HTML so will open in any browser.
.
Landscapes are the only thing you cant do on a Mac but then 90% of the PC maps use a default landscape anyway.
If you need  a bespoke landscape there is sure to be one close enough that you can borrow from an existing PC map.
Or It may be possible for someone to do you one, not me  as the  editors don't work for me  either.  Most were written for  W98/ME/2000- 16?/32 bit.
Just a thought But seeing as the  game  and its editors are so old they should be fine run  on a PC Emulator.

I don't seem to have the profiles folder, at all. Odd. Ah, well. If it doesn't effect gameplay, I'm not worried. Although I would think it has to make save files SOMEWHERE, and I'm unable to find them.

Try checking the readme file? - Perhaps it's explained there for the mac?

There doesn't seem to be anything in the readme file that helps. Well, I suppose it's not a problem. A bit annoying for my perfectionism... XD But not a problem. Thank you!
