Leash problem

Hi all, welcome to my first post, brass band fanfare and cheerleaders and all that jazz.

Anyway, I played B&W, fell in love and lost many hours playing it.  Then, horror of horrors, got to third land and halfway through the game crashed whenever I tried to save it, or autosave occurred.  Decided I couldn't realistically pay the entire game in one sitting, backed up my stuff using BnWBU, uninstalled the game.

Many months later, I decided my frustration had finally gone, and decided to replay the game.  After many, many attempts, I finally got it working perfectly on Vista with no save problems (I'm guessing the most recent save game was corrupted or something because I had to load a game from the end of level 2 to get all this to work.

I apologise for all this ramble BTW, but I'm setting the scene for a problem that I haven't noticed anyone else had had on the internet, and I like to build the suspense.

So, I play through level 3, everything going swimmingly, getting annoyed by Lethys stealing all my carefully grown forests all the time, finally win over the third village, the final pillar falls and...

TADA!  I get my Creature (a lovely angelic Ape BTW) back.  Great.... :laugh2

...except the game doesn't see fit to return any of my leashes back as well.  So my creature is wandering around like a lost soul all the time, being harassed by Lethys  :devil and his nasty minion. :angry

I can start a skirmish game, and everything is fine.  But going gack to the story game, and nada.  Zip.  Not even a piece of string with a name tag on it for me to use.  Tried saving and reloading, still nothing.  Casting the leash motions also doesn't work (the leash icons are not in the lower right either).

I have unlocked the Chimp creature, so in theory I could swap my Ape for the Chimp and see if that helps, but since I can't lead him to the Chimp to swap him, I'd have to wait for him to randomly get near there.  Which isn't likely.

Any ideas anybody?

(BTW if you're still here after all that, you're a saint.  Or I'm a good writer.)

Oh yes, nearly forgot.  Running on Windows Vista.  Using patch 1.2 (I assume from the skipped tutorial on reinstallation since Vista doesn't let you know by the number).  Using NVidia Geforce 8400 GS, though I can't see it being a graphics problem.  I am using Norton 360 but I can't see it being a conflict with that either.  I have had too many chocolates today, but I don't think that is causing a problem either.  At least not with the game.

Hmm.  Odd one this.

What about using the leash key on your keyboard.  I think its the "L" key or something ??? .

Should be in the instructions I think.

Oh yes, forgot to include that.  Tried using the L key, didn't work.

Then, horror of horrors, got to third land and halfway through the game crashed whenever I tried to save it, or autosave occurred.

Hi, I wonder if your save is corrrupted. What happens if you restart on an earlier save?

I can see why you say that, but the game I loaded when I installed the game started on level 2 and the leash was fine.  If corruption has occurred in my current game, then it must have been since then i.e. some time on level 3.  In which case the only way to find out if any of my save games are intact, i.e. not corrupt I would have to play them all the way through level 3 to the point of getting my creature back, yes?

That could take a while.  I'd hate to restart halfway through the level, only to find after a lot of hours play that the same thing happens.  Anyway, I usually keep overwriting the same save slot game so I don't think I have any saves I could try, other than on level 2 , which we know are fine.

Is there no way of editing a save game file to include the leashes that anyone knows about?

My other idea is simply to play through the rest of level three, hope it doesn't take too long to get that final damn village without a creature and hope the leashes are restored on level 4.

My question;

During land 2, your creature gets stolen, it then says "the leash doesn't work", if you try to leash your creature.

Did you try this? Yes / No?

Second question, when ariving on land 3, are the leashes gone emidatly?

Did you try leashing before your temple is built, Yes / No?

Have you been able to re-create the bug, on / in a new game / player?
If answer is no, obviously it's the save game that's been punted to oblivion.

Oh, and if you have to know, No, answering these questions will not help me give you a sollution, however, they are fun to ask.

And, I know it can't be Vista that's bludgering your game, as I myself am running on vista since 2 days ago, and finished BW (with cache cheats to speed test) and did not have the leash bug.

Although, I do not know how playing 'fair' the game will be in land 3, as I am still on land 1, slowly teaching my creature to heal people that are under 30% L (life) value... yet.. my people seem reluctant to get 'ill', or 'lifeless'.. .>_>

T-T The Vilage banther and / or foossball addon kicked my save game to a state of parpetual re-inactment, not allowing any new save games.. :(

So, question for you, are you using any of the non-required-yet-fun-to-have patches?

Each save is different. Try starting with a save from before the crash.

Or see what happens when you reach land 4.

OK, update time.  No, I haven't any addons, just the patched game itself.

Level 4 came, but sadly Santa did not see fit to bring me my leash again.  I've obviously not been a good boy.  :devil

I managed to try a few old games (circa 2007) from the first time I installed the game, but these were on level 2, after my Creature had been led into the vortex.  There was no leash icon, but I don't know whether I would have had one anyway.

I found a new game i.e. this time around, on level 3, not yet reclaimed my creature, but had the leash icon.  I was ecstatic to say the least.  Pity, when I saved it four minutes later the game crashed.  :angry

The save game structure seems a bit weird, don't know if it is supposed to be like this, but I can't access all my games from the menu.  However, when I load an autosave game for a previous land, going back into the save game room displays some of the previous games shown and some totally new ones.

I'm somewhat tired tonight from work so I haven't had the patience to have another go, but I'll probably fire it up tomorrow and see if I can get any more success.  I'm not holding out much hope though.

All that remains is to forsake the 'oblivionated' save game, and start at the beginning.

I just re-installed my vista, as I noticed the HDD I used as OS disk, already had a vista install on it that belonged to my brother. Silly me forgot to Format before instalation.

Let's hope my save games don't get stuck with super glue again at a certain point ^^;;

OK, finally solved the problem! :balloons
Turns out the solution was dead easy.

All I had to do was play through all of level 2 and level 3 in their entirety from a *really* old saved game and hey presto, it's fixed.  My creature has developed a nasty habit of setting fire to any wonders I create though...

Glad to hear that. It could be that your other saves were corrupted somehow.

Oh yes, the totally unpredictable BW1 creature. Have fun. :D
