if you want to use milkshape use instructions :
file import black and white L3D
just clic ok. Don't change settings
file export black and white L3D
select use existing skeleton/materials ID's from and select the imported file
unselect preserve morph targets from imported model
p.s. the textures bug in the black and white L3D visuliser but not in game. to see result in visuliser load original mase model and load creation as alignement.
ps one chance mod, open the original and make all mods before saving can't save and open saved version
for zero tecnical problemes don't change base model
