How do I get started with scripting using the BW script editor?

I hear I need to install a patch for the editor to validate.  Which patch do I need?  I tried installing 1.1 but it crashes my game. Any advice? 

(Is there also a script library for BW1 like there is for BW2?  Or are they coded in the same programming language?)

Try the V1.20 patch.

There's really not much available on scripting for BW1. I do have some sample scripts and the language is similar to that used for BW2. But most of the scripting information was lost when Lenny closed BWGarage. There are a few tools available in the downloads area, but I've never really looked at them.
