Coordinates?

So, I have been trying my hand at simple text editing of already existing scripts since I use a Mac and have no modding apps at my disposal. I have been surprised what I can accomplish this way :D

However, I am unclear on how to determine correct coordinates for things like a new town. When the code is something like -  "1099.89,2010.22" <- where does that number come from? Do you need a program to figure these numbers out?

Just a note, my math skills SUCK. I honestly can't look at those two numbers and tell if there is a logical formula to how they correspond to each other. I've tried changing them slightly to add as example, a rock next to the temple, but all it does is crash the game :upside

I can add villagers and miracle seeds by changing the numbers without crashing, though. So, I'm a little lost at the mo.

To recap - Is there a tool that tells you where on the map these numbers are located, hence where the object will show up? Can you do this by simple text editing alone?

I used to be a hex editor for the original Petz games back in the day (I made the Shimmer Dane for anyone who might know what the heck I'm talking about :p), and also made some agents for the game Creatures 3. Since playing B&W again it has sparked my long lost interest in such things and I'm have lots of fun experimenting and learning so far :woot

The coordinate are going to be a pain for you since you probably can't use either of the programs which Minas suggested.

The coordinates are the X,Y coordinates of the map. The best you can do is to look at the coordinates of other objects and guesstimate the coordinates. The big thing is figuring out where North is. If you look at the rotation of an object, it might help. One thing to do is to take a screen shot of the area from above. Print it and mark the locations of certain objects to use as starting points.

If I haven't suggested it earlier. Download the mapping list. It will be of great benefit to you in figuring out some of the small details.

Thank you!

I hadn't thought of viewing the map like a... erm, map... from a top down view. Indeed, that would help in figuring out where stuff is. That's an A+ Idea! And yes, I have the mapping list which has proved most useful thus far.

I might try running those programs on my old PC which has Win 98 SE on it and also B&W, along with a heap of other older awesome games. The circuits are a bit insane though and the PC is quite unstable, but as long as it keeps booting I will give it odd jobs from time to time. I just never know when the last shut down will be the very last shut down ever. I dread the day. I loved that computer in his prime.
