Can't get BW to start up anymore

Hi, I had black and white running on my vista machine before and now it locks up the machine when I try to start it.  I have to hit the reset button. 

When I got it working originally compatibility was set to windows 2000 and Run as Admin.  Patch 1.2 loaded and no other BnW addons etc.

The System info:

OS:  Windows Vista Home Premium  Service Pack 2 
64 bit Operating System
Intel i7 Core    965 @ 3.2 GHz
6GB  Ram
VID CARD :ATI HD4870 X2 2GB PCI-EXPRESS
Samsung DVD RW 20x Sata

Now in the beginning I would manually exit the 3 programs on the taskbar to get BW to run: 

Windows Sidebar
AVG Anti Virus
ATI icon for  Catalyst Control Center

I played into land 3 no problems.  Saved games just fine, ran on max settings. 

Then one day I was exiting the taskbar programs when I wondered what the ATI was.  I might have changed something.  No idea.

This message or something like it shows up  "ATIKMDAG stopped responding... has recovered... "

But BnW Still wouldn't even start.

So I reinstalled BnW and patch 1.2.  I went into the Catalyst Control Center and defaulted everything to original settings.

Now when I try to open BW I hear the disk drive spin a minute and the computer becomes nonresponsive.

RESET.



Ideas?

Hi, it's nice to see people still playing the game. :)

Even before Vista, B&W did have a tendency to get cranky at times and not want to load. I don't think it's the Catalyst Control panel since that's what I use (XP) and it's never given a problem.

Want I would suggest is to re-install B&W.

Backup any profiles using BWBackup. Uninstall the game and delete all of the files and folders in the game directory except for the  DataLandscapes, ScriptsCreaturemind and Scriptsplaygrounds folders. Empty the recycle bin and do a defrag of the drive the game is in. Then  reinistalll the game, patch it to V1.20 and then restore the profiles.

There was nothing to backup so I just canned the whole lot.  Now to Defrag the 150 Gig HD.
 
Finished with the Defrag and re-installed BW and patch 1.2

Same result.  Run BW1 and the computer freezes.

After you uninstall, it might be a good idea to go to C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White and delete all the files there. After uninstalling, it doesn't remove all of the files, one of which might be corrupt. Since you don't want to keep your old progress, this should be a good way to get it running again, i hope it helps.
 
I wiped all traces of BW from the machine.  Installation looked normal.

I just don't know.
 
Me neither. You were able to run it before. So what's different now?

I'm assuming you are using compatibility mode. Have you tried launching the game without the patch installed?

Reinstalled BW from scratch and when it offered to start the game I accepted.

It ran.  :shocked                      :woot

I ran through some of the tutorial and tried to save it a few times.

Exited the game and found the old compatibilty settings were still in place.



Just wanted to let you know I'd made progress.

Is that with or without the patch?
 
Sorry didn't notice your post .... I was playing!


I chose "play BW now" during the installation.  So initially no patch. Then I installed 1.1, don't need MP.

I made it to land two and am getting ready to invade land 3.  See if it crashes again.

The game seems much easier than I remember.  I'm older and wiser now?  Probably Vista's doing.




Ordered BW 2 this week, should be nice.
