BW2 on Windows 10

I can confirm that BW2 will run in Windows 10...with one major caveat.

1) Install BW2 from CD into a non-default directory with a short name with no spaces, such as: C:\BW2
2) Install patches 1.1 & 1.2

At this point, even if you modify the compatibility settings for white.exe ("Run as Administrator" and "XP Service Pack 2" compatibility mode), the game will not run.

If you investigate your Event Viewer after a failed attempt to start BW2, you will find these events in your System log:

The description for Event ID 1060 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\??\C:\WINDOWS\SysWow64\drivers\SECDRV.SYS

This SECRDV.SYS issue is causing problems with many older games, but Microsoft has not yet responded to the problem:

Alas, the only workaround seems to be to use a No-CD solution ("crack") to circumvent the problem. Once that is done, then setting the aforementioned compatibility settings on white.exe allows the game to run properly.

The free upg. will last til june or so of 2016 iirc, there's still time for Microsoft to improve their product before handing out samples.

Hey Handsome Matt,

I installed your patch, and I'm happy to say B&W2 is now running! However, all the texts seems to have dissappeared: When I click the signs I hear a 'plop' but no text shows up, my creatures learning text is gone and when I place buildings the information does not show up (such as the impressiveness, smiley-face, etc.).
Do you or anyone else know how to fix this?

(sorry if im being painfully obvious but) I think there is an option in the settings that toggles how long the text shows up for, or if it shows up at all. I think it's a little slider that you can adjust; maybe you can try checking if it's turned off? Otherwise, I don't know.

Should be called "tooltips" or something along the lines, I believe.

I'd appreciate that as well. I just found my disc and it doesn't run.

Edit: I downloaded a fix from the internet.
I'm not sure if it's cracked or not but I bought the game so whatever.

okay so after some digging, i managed to find my Windows report archive, and pulled the latest report for B&W2 crashing. I wasnt able to see any cause, but you're a bit more experienced in this feild than myself. If I were to send this archive to you, would it be able to tell anything about what is going on?
