Villagers' Happiness?

I just finished Land 8, and I notice that my villagers' happiness is at the bottom of the scale.  When I mouse over their houses, even though they are villas, it shows a negative happiness number.  Have I built them in the wrong places?  What sort of things can you do to increase the people's happiness?

If the villas are all bunched together, then the villagers will be unhappy.  Put simply, they want a bit of garden sapce between each house.  When laying down a house you should see either a Green Happy Smiley or a Red Unhappy Smiley as you hold the plan over a particular spot.  As you move the house around, you may see the smiley change.

In general, if you place a house near an Evil or ugly building, the Smiley will be Red, meaning placing a house here will make the villagers unhappy.  If you space out your houses enough, then you'll get the happy smilies and your entire village will be happy.  The down side is now that you can put down the same amount of houses in the same are as you once did.  You kind of have to balance it out.  This can be done in a number of ways:

  • The smilies operate on a sliding scale.  There's varying degrees of happiness and unhappiness with where you place a house (or any other building for that matter).  You'll see what I mean when you see all the different smilies possible.
  • You can make people more happy with their tightly packed houses by building impressive structures nearby, be they simple pillars and statues or temples and wonders.

Hope that helps :;): .

Thanks.  I suppose I should have noticed that stuff before.  :D

A happiness tip: you can make any unhappy (yellow/red face icon) building happy (green icon) by planting trees around it. This is useful when you need to place production and civic buildings together, e.g. building a university next to a smelter to increase ore production.

The unhappier the building, the more trees you'll need. Usually five or six will make the most unhappy buildings happy.

Bonus: each tree planted next to a building gives +20 impressiveness. :)
