:blues: Hello. I bought "Black & White 2" for myself for X-mas. I might unwrap it X-mas Eve so I can try and download the big patch, but I doubt I will be able to download it cause I got dial-up. I bought it because I read that it was in the Guiness Book of World Records for the a.i. or something, because a review said it was easy and for "non-gamers" and I only had to use the mouse, because I read that the game physics could have a wall break at a certain point and that little guys with swords couldn't break the wall unless they threw boulders at it or something, and because this is not the kind of game I usually play so I wanted to try something different and I liked "Fable". I played a game a long time ago called "Magic Carpet". You could build bases and things with mana, and could deform the enviroment. I read something about volcanos being turned into mountains. Can you change the land any other ways? Like make rivers or something? What does the creature do? I don't understand it's purpose. Is that the A.I. that the Guiness Book of World Records has in it? I saw some pictures of what looked like baby creatures. I assume it grows-up or something. I saw a picture with a guy in an arena fighting a polar bear. Are there other creatures for that guy to fight? Are there animals that he can go hunt to get food? Can he raise farm animals on a farm? Can he go fish? Can I do anything tactical or strategic with an army? What can I expect from this game? Why is it good?

Hi and welcome to the boards. Phew, allot of questions, ill try to answer most of them.
1: Volcanoes can make permanent mountains, BUT its a glitch, and you CAN'T change the landscape any other way.
2: The creature can collect resources, fight, entertain villagers and other things. Yes its the creature A.I. in the Guinness world records, but it doesn't actually seem that good.
3: They grow bigger than the how they start of, but they don't grow huge.
4: From what I've seen he only fights a polar bear, and he does that in a building, you can't control him.
5: You can pick up animals and drop them into the store house but that's the only way to use them.
6: Farms only grow grain.
7: There are no fish in the game.
8: Other than the fact that archers shoot further when on higher ground I've seen no tactical or strategic elements with army's.
9: The game is a let down from what it was meant to be, but it has its good points, even if they are few.
10: Well its not that great, BUT that's my opinion, some think its very good while others hate it or cant get it to work. I finished it in about five days, and it has little replay value.
I hope that helped, and like i said, welcome to the boards.

:( Oh. I thought it might be a good game. I wonder why people post on a website about a game they don't like then. ???

Aw c'mon, your acting like its a horrible game. Its a GREAT game.

Most of us are here on account of the original game. And now that we've played BW2, we're just waiting to see if the expected patch will add some more interest to the game.

The original game worked differently. In it the creature mind was separate from the game. So if you played a profile, you always had the same creature. With BW2, the creature is a part of the game and if you go back to a previous save your creature will be at the level of knowledge that he was at the time of the save.
Your creature is your helper, as it were, since he can act outside of your influence ring. . He starts of small and will grow to full height over time, you also need to train him. In the original game, both of these required some time to achieve, something made much easier in BW2. Now in B&W though, you needed your creature more as you were required to go out and impress the other villages to take them over rather than luring them to your city as in BW2.

On the plus side, the graphics are just fantastic and game play is good. It's just not what a lot of us expected.

Yeah, that pretty mush sums it up. I have also shelved the game for now to see if they introduce a skirmish or not. I'm the kind of person who demands extreme re-playability in games. Random maps, skirmish etc. Playing a storyline over and over again just doesn't cut it for me. I was expecting a small story with the emphasis on skirmish, only to find there isn't any skirmish to begin with.

As Kays said, the game is still cool, but I got bored of it really quick. Usually I'll play an interesting game for months, even years. This one only lasted a month or so. This would be such a cool game to keep trying from different perspectives, creatures, alignments, strategies etc. It's annoying to try all that out when you have to play through a tutorial which comprises half the storyline each and every time.

Without multiplayer, the game has to rely completely on the AI. The creature AI is in the Guinness Book of World Records, and it does do the job. The biggest complaint there is that it does it a little too good. But there's plenty of discussion on that elsewhere. The enemy AI leaves something to be desired, however.

Didn't mean to turn this into a game-bashing thread. It's fun & pretty, but lacks re-playability at the moment - something that will hopefully be remedied. I haven't given up on it yet. I guess my primary feeling is that I had such high hopes for this. It was in development for years and years. For the life of me, I can't figure out what took four years to make.

In any event, welcome to the site.  :) I hope you enjoy.

Hmmm... I don't have any preconceptions about it, so I might be able to enjoy it. I think I should install it now. That way, if I don't like it, I can regift it. Random maps would be nice to have. Or a map editor. I'm not sure how "skirmishes" would be different from regular battles though. When is the next patch coming out? I was able to download the last patch after all. Is the next patch supposed to have anything new?

There is no official word on the next patch other than it will be released in December.

It should take care of a number of bugs. Hopefully, it'll also contain both skirmish and multi-player and the expected. mapping and scripting tools.

I tried it out. It's pretty cool. The graphics are pretty. It reminds me of "Magic Carpet", except you only get one monster and can't fly around on a magic carpet. It also reminds me of "Sea Monkeys", and "Chia Pet". I think I will keep it, and hope that the patch comes out this month and has all that good stuff. It would be nice to make an island, and be the different peoples. I like to watch the volcanos.

Actually, there's fish in the first land.

:/ I'm disappointed with the creature, though.  Replayability is a big factor for me, and in BW1 training the creature was my favorite thing to do... Even if the apes mocked me.

Ah yes, the joys of creature training and creature poop. :p

Glad you like it Maggot. :)

Now if you do see a copy of the orignal game in the bargin bins, pick it up and give it a try.

Ok. :) Is there any way of making the very first island playable without using one of the other island's script or whatever? Cause it doesn't look right when I do that. I managed to turn the creature pen into a town center, but none of the tool bar or creature options were available. I assume because at the begining of the game, I had not yet gone through those parts of the tutorial. Is there anyway to tell the game to unlock those options? Like trick it into thinking I had already completed that part of the tutorial, so the later options were available? I would hope it's something as simple as changing a "0" to a "1" somewhere. I thought it'd be quicker if I asked you guys, since you may already know. :D

No, for now that's the only way you can play Land 1. That might change if and when we get the mapping and scripting tools.

Now I have seen a method by where you can choose a creature and then go to any land you wish. But I haven't tried it. However once you've got your creature, you're stuck to the story line.

You probably could write those into a map if you wished, but you do need the coordinates to place them.

In going through the unused models there's also a lot of neat stuff that wasn't used. There's the possibility of some nice maps once we get the tools.

:)              Awwwww come on  Black & White 2 is a brilliant game i think it is a game better than the first one
