The first B&W was truly unique. its realism coupled with the brand new idea of being in total control in a place where your actions have end results (some times very bad ones) but most of all for me it was its realism that took me by suprise. For example if you simply create miracle food to feed your people they won't see any need to continue to work in the fields and begin to become dependent and lazy. The same thing is shown in the creature interface in the first B&W your creature develops his own personality and although you can teach him he does have his own ways.
The second B&W was for me both a joy and a dissapointment. It had knew things that the last one didn't such as powerfull epic miracles as well as war but at the same time it let go of some realism that the first one had that i loved so much. This was most apparent in the creature interface where he did only as you taught him making him much more like a robot then a actually creature. but the biggest let down was the war part. Although in the first B&W i always wanted to make war units when they first introduced it was much more action oriented the realistic oriented. Thing like bottle necks and choke points have almost no effect on the outcome of a battle and the closest thing to siege warfare is a catapult. and theres also one other thing no matter how unhappy your people get in the second B&W they never do anything about, and settlements no matter how huge they may get can never actually upgrade there buildings.
But I'm a fare person and i believe that the third B&W can make up for all the mistakes of the second.
simply additions and modifications such as:

a much more realistic creature interface (such as creatures that take a much longer time to learn what you want them to do as well as creatures that some times get frustrated angry and defiant)

a more realistic and much wider battle system where many more units are recruitble (for instance  warrior priest types for good gods, as well as much wider rang for of siege combat with ladder and towers for taking on wall fortifications, with the addition of a morale level for troops as well as a stamina level)

the addition of ports (one thing the B&W saga as yet to tap into is the ocean. ports capable of sailing to the corners of the world with trade, boats capable of fishing as well as war vessels)

a more advanced system of settlement controll (such as taxation, rebelions in unhappy settlements as well as settlement upgrades with size and population growth. for example towns size settlements would only be able to build town sized building until it grows then the already standing structures can be upgrade from houses to villas when it reaches the next size level)

the addition of new disciple types (such as profits to remind the people who's pulling all the strings, and priests who can teach the people what you want them to learn. war or peace.

the addition of trade (another thing that has yet to be tapped into. trade between settlements via roads. with the simple addition of trade caravans that can go from settlement to settlement)

All in all I've been very content with the black and white saga thus far. i just think with the addition of troop types for good gods as well as new disciple and above all else more realism (like the first B&W) would be the best way to contour the series

Also, what was the point of adding the army stuff, when they never even put in mulitplayer support. and btw they had traders in bw1.
